Radiation-Induced Lung Cancers in Murine Models

چکیده
Radiation therapy is a key weapon in the modern arsenal of cancer treatment. However, this effective treatment comes with risks of its own, and the sheer number of patients that undergo radiation as a part of their therapy regimen is only increasing. As this number increases, so does the incidence of secondary, radiation-induced neoplasias, creating a need for therapeutic agents targeted specifically towards reduction in the incidence of and treatment of these cancers. Development and efficacy testing of these agents requires not only extensive in vitro testing, but also a set of reliable animal models to accurately recreate the complex situations of radiation-induced carcinogenesis. The laboratory mouse Mus musculus remains the most relevant animal model in cancer research due to the molecular and physiological similarities it shares with man, its small size and high rate of breeding in captivity, and its fully sequenced genome. In this work, we review relevant M. musculus inbred and F1 hybrid animal models, as well as methods of induction of radiation-induced lung cancers. Associated molecular pathologies are also included.

Possible effect of background radiation on cancer incidence in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province.
Background: The induction of cancer appears to be the most important effect of low-dose ionizing radiation to occur in an exposed population. In developing countries 94% of human radiation is from natural sources. In Iran some high altitude regions such as, Chaharmahal & Bakhtiari has high levels of the natural background radiation (higher than the worldwide average). Therefore, investigation o...

Background: Radiation-induced lung injury is a refractory side effect in lung cancer radiotherapy, the mechanism still remains unclear, hence an appropriate animal mode may become useful to investigate it. Materials and Methods: 50 female Wistar rats were randomly divided into 5 groups, average 10 rats/cage: A. control group B. 3Gy×10f C. 6Gy×5f D. 12.5Gy×1f E.15.3Gy×1f....
متن کاملEstimating the Radiation-Induced Cancer Risks in Pediatric Computed Tomography
Introduction One of the central questions in radiological protection is the magnitude of the risks from low doses of radiation, related to the justification and optimization of the diagnostic medical exposures. Therefore, the aim of this study was to estimate the cancer incidence and mortality risks in children of different ages, sizes, and ethnicities undergoing computed tomography examination...
متن کاملAnti-inflammatory role of piperine against rat lung tissue damage induced by gamma-rays
Background: Radiation‐induced acute lung damages are refractory side effects in lung cancer radiotherapy (RT). Prospective study investigates the possible role of piperine (Pip) as anti-inflammatory agent against γ-rays-induced lung tissue lesions in an applicable rat model. Materials and Methods: Fifty-six Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups: Control, rats were administered...

Background: Vitamin D, especially its most active metabolite 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D₃(Vit D) is essential in regulating a wide variety of biologic processes, such as regulating mesangial cell activation. The objective of this study was to assess the histopathological changes of effectiveness of Vit D as a protective agent against radiation induced lung injury. Materials and Methods: Eighteen Wi...
